What can you learn from Ron and Gina?

Here's one marketing insight I learned from them a while back...

Every business (whether for-profit or non-profit) should have a presence on the internet.   That business's online presence needs to attract clients in a market it serves... not dream about drawing some phantom internet user from thousands of miles away who is not a realistic prospect for the company.  

What this means is that online, it is more important than ever that you target your marketing efforts to the audience that is most likely to buy what you have to offer.  Why is it so essential that your internet presence is targeted?

Gina showed me a recent survey that illustrates the importance of market clarity.... 

Notice what you're seeing here...  

There are 252,908,000 internet users in North America -- over 74% of the total population! -- and approximately 228,000,000 in the United States alone.  In fact, there are more than 1.6+ billion internet users worldwide!  While that is an impressive number of people, don't let it distract you!   

There are only two questions that should matter to you ...

(1) How many of those people are in your target market? and 
(2) How can you use the internet to connect with these  relatively few people who are in your target market?

What this means to you is this...

If you have an ONline business, you've got more than 1.6 billion people who can potentially become your next customers!  That's AWESOME!

But, if you're an OFFline business, having 1.6 billion people who might see your message online isn't necessarily going to help increase your profits even a little bit.  A quick example will illustrate what I mean here...

If your business is an offline store located in the Macon, Georgia area, the U.S. Bureau of Census indicated that the 2008 population of the  combined Metropolitan Statistical Area of Macon, Warner Robins, Fort Valley is only 352,912 with Macon proper having a population of 92,775.

The fact of the matter is that regardless of the millions of internet users in the US and the 1.6 billion around the world using the internet -- if you have an offline store, it isn't likely to be visited by any of them at all!  So the 1.6 billion internet users won't help you grow your business!  

The only people that matter to your offline store are those 92,775 people who live in Macon, GA!   Unless you focus your internet efforts at reaching ONLY those 92,775 people living in Macon, GA (or the handful of people who live within a short driving distance from Macon), the billions of internet users won't make you any more money!

Now, if the internet doesn't expand your target audience at all, how then will your offline business benefit from having a presence online?

The value of your internet presence is that it allows you to connect with people in your geographical region (or your "cyber-niche") so that you can build a relationship with them before they even set foot in your business.  Through the internet, you can hold real "conversations" with people that allow them to get to know you, like you, and trust you. 

By building relationships with your ideal prospects online, you'll get people interested in what you have to offer -- even before they set foot in your offline business -- helping you to bring people to your doorstep who would never otherwise have walked in your front door!

In other words, the biggest benefit of using the internet (instead of more traditional offline marketing methods such as billboard advertising, newspaper advertising, direct mail, televisions ads, radio ads, Yellow Pages ads, etc). is that your marketing efforts are more effective because online you're able to reach a highly targeted market for a MUCH smaller investment!  

Think of it this way... 

Internet marketing employs "rifle bullets fired at specific targets" approach.   
Most offline marketing uses a "shotgun shells fired at random crowds" approach.  

The rifle bullet approach gives you a much better chance of hitting your target than you have with the shotgun approach!  In fact, it gets even better because not only are you able to hit your target more often, but most of the time, using the internet to reach new customers is practically FREE

Essentially, your only cost of having an internet presence is around $100 per year for hosting your website and registering your domain name. That's it!  Talk about a HUGE savings over traditional offline marketing methods!

And, if your business is entirely Online, that means that you have practically no overhead, practically no inventory costs, and few (if any at all) employees to pay.

But it gets better still ...

Unlike offline advertising sources that talk AT your prospects, your online marketing efforts allow you to actually interact with your prospects.  This two way conversation makes people MUCH more likely to buy from you once they know, like and trust you.

"The internet -- and, in particular, social media (blogs, Twitter, Facebook, etc.) -- lets you build relationships with your prospects so they get to know you, like you, and trust you. The result is that your prospects buy more readily AND you don't have to 'sell' them at all!"  

The conversations you have online allow you to develop deeper connections with each potential client.  This improves your business in a number of different ways:

1)  Your prospects get to know, like, and trust you long before they ever step into your business.  This causes them to be much more qualified as prospects for what you sell.

2)  Since your relationship with your prospects and customers is stronger, the amount you'll make from any one individual prospect or customer will increase because they'll buy from you repeatedly.  This increases the lifetime value of each client and massively improves your company's financial results!

3)  You no longer have to "sell" your prospects to get them to buy from you!  The relationships you build just by having conversations with people will lead people to naturally buy more. This leaves you less stressed since you no longer have to be the salesman!

In the offline world, in order to get new customers, you have no choice but to "sell" them on what you have to offer.  Offline, if you aren't "selling" prospects in your ads, you aren't likely to get many new customers walking through your door at all!  You don't really have a choice offline -- you  either learn to "sell" in your advertising or you go under!  

When people first started setting up businesses online, they did the same thing they had always done offline -- they SOLD their customers in a high-pressure way.  In fact, if you look at the majority of the business websites today, they're still doing things this same old way!

But high-pressure selling isn't much fun, is it?  There aren't many business owners online or off who enjoy having to "sell" people.  And there aren't many prospects -- online or off -- who enjoy being sold to either.

So, when you're doing business in a high-pressure sales kind of way -- you're not having fun doing it, your prospects aren't having much fun experiencing it -- and the result is that you aren't very profitable either!  

You have two choices really.  You can continue using high-pressure marketing and advertising tactics that set you up for having to "sell" your prospects, which can be expensive if done offline and are just not any fun for you or your prospect at all -- and that result in smaller profits.  OR -- or you can use the internet and social media together to change all that and watch your profits take off in the process!

Let's take a quick look at how using social media on the internet can SKYROCKET your profits...


"How does Social Media work online?"

As a business using the internet to reach your ideal prospects, your marketing efforts become really simple!

All you have to do is talk about the problems your prospects have and show them how what you offer solves their problems.  You'll do this by using a blog and what we call "web 2.0" sites.  These are sites like Twitter.com, Facebook.com, and many others that you've probably already heard of.

As you talk with people on these sites, your conversation will end up in search engines where your prospects are likely to find your message as they search for solutions to their problems.  Your prospects will also see your message directly on the social sites where you post it. 

Once people find your message, they're likely to reply to what you said.  This starts extended conversations with your prospects.  These conversations begin to build confidence, trust, and relationships.  Through these conversations, people get to know you, like you, and trust you because they discover how you can help them to solve their problems.  This all takes place long before your prospect ever steps foot into your offline business or gets to your online website!

Of course, as your prospects see how helpful you can be, they'll want to investigate how you can help them, and this is what draws them to your business -- meaning to your website (if your business is online) or to your offline location (if your business is offline). That's where your prospects will see the products and services you offer!

And -- Bingo!  Without ever "selling" anyone at all, you've got a new customer!

As your prospects get to know more about what you have to offer, they tend to become more loyal and more enthusiastic about doing business with you, too!  They start telling their friends and family about you.  And soon, you have even more new prospects walking in your front door!

With this approach, you no longer need to use hype-filled sales tactics like cold calling or direct mail focused on the "selling" -- just to get people to buy your products and services.  

It gets even better, too.  You no longer have to compete with your competition based solely on price, either!  People will want to buy from YOU -- the guy they just got to know -- and not your competitors.  This means you can charge more for your products and services, as well!

So the internet doesn't just help businesses reach more people.  It has TONS of other benefits as well!  The internet:

  • Allows you to reach more people

  • Helps you build more loyal clients

  • Makes sales more effectively for you

  • Allows you to charge more for your products and services

All this happens because the internet harnesses "Relationship Marketing" to build sales by growing relationships. It involves helping your clients and customers solve their problems and in doing so, builds relationships and those relationships result in sale after sale after sale!.

And that's what Social Marketing is really all about!  Building RELATIONSHIPS that turn into sales over and over again!  It's THAT simple!

Here's a case history of someone (not necessarily typical) that illustrates just how big the results can be when you use the internet to grow your business...
